Antarctica: Doing business and staying in touch
Doing Business in Antarctica
Keeping in Touch in Antarctica
Mobile Phone
There is no continent-wide public mobile phone network in Antarctica. Some research stations have local or limited mobile services, but visitors should not expect ordinary mobile coverage while travelling. Expedition vessels generally rely on satellite communications.
Internet
Internet access is generally available aboard expedition vessels via satellite, although speed, availability and charges vary considerably between operators and ships. Connections may be slower or less reliable than on land and can be affected by the vessel's location and weather conditions. Visitors should check the facilities and charges offered by their expedition operator before departure.
Post
Visitors can send mail from a small number of Antarctic facilities, including the seasonal post office at Port Lockroy on the Antarctic Peninsula, but delivery may take several weeks or longer.
